Outcome of the Meeting 29 October 2009
- Participants: Mike, Sergio, Christian
Summary of discussion
We agreed to proceed with an SGE-centric integration. the two clusters (Schrodiger and Grid) will be integrated through an SGE scheduler sitting on top of the two. Both clusters will run SGE thus allowing the scheduler to manage both resources.
Advantages:
Single production-like technology for managing resources
Single point for defining resource access rules (fairshare and so)
Easy to manage and control
Disadvantages:
Not using explicitly grid-related technologies, makes further integration of other resources more difficult (see condor pool for example)
less flexibility in terms of the way resources could be managed and/or organized
Tightly coupling of the two resources (but this is pretty much inevitable)
Scenario:
Schrodiger will run SuSe-11 and SGE as it does already
Grid will run Rocks-5 Cluster management suite: CentOS-5 + SGE
An additional box will be used for running SGE meta scheduler
Most of the resource allocation policies will be implemented at the meta- scheduler level
Most of the application binaries should work for both systems already (GAMESS does)
Clusters will share scratch Panasas filesystem (1Gb link of each node of Grid will be in the panasas FS switch)
Clusters will share user account (ldap)
